Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia) – Fort Worth, TX
Overview
As a male, having enlarged breasts can be uncomfortable, as well as socially and psychologically difficult. Some men may even avoid physical activity or intimacy to hide their condition. This condition is called gynecomastia and can be permanently eliminated through breast reduction surgery. Gynecomastia, a medical term derived from the Greek words for “woman-like breasts,” affects about 30% of all men. Men in Fort Worth with large, sagging, or feminine-looking breasts do not have to hide in shame or embarrassment. This is a common issue for men who have gained or lost weight, gone through hormone treatments at a younger age, or experienced significant growth spurts into adulthood. Gynecomastia may be associated with hormonal imbalance, obesity, liver disease, or can occur as a side-effect of medication. Prior to choosing a surgical solution, the plastic surgeons of Fort Worth Plastic Surgery will work with you on diet and exercise to see if your condition can be resolved naturally. If that does not deliver the results, our doctors may recommend surgical intervention. We are here to help you regain your masculinity.
Surgical Technique
Breast reduction surgery for men is done through a special liposuction technique. This is performed to remove the fatty tissue residing under the skin. During this approach, a small incision is made around the areola (intra-areolar). This allows access for a suction device to move through the chest and remove excess fat and tissue. In severe gynecomastia cases, an en bloc resection of excessive breast tissue and tightening of loose skin may be necessary. This includes nipple grafting and may require a staged surgery.
During/After Surgery
All male breast reduction procedures are performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure at an accredited surgical facility. The surgery typically lasts about one hour. After surgery there will be some swelling and a compression garment should be worn for 1-2 weeks. Most patients resume normal work schedules within a few days, and incorporate exercise within 4 weeks. This surgery allows men to feel more confident when exposing their chest to reveal a firmer, flatter physique. In most cases, scarring is inconspicuous.
