Think Breast Implants Are Too Big For You? New Trends Might Change Your Mind

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than a quarter million breast augmentation surgeries were performed in 2016, up almost 30 percent since 2000. Though breast augmentation remains the #1 requested plastic surgery procedure, concerns over how realistic breasts will look after the procedure remain the primary reason some women choose not to proceed. And although augmented breasts have gained a more realistic look and feel with the introduction of new implants, many women still worry about their results. Today, greater options and advancements in breast augmentation technology ensure that you’ll get the results you want.

It’s time to let go of old beliefs and step into new trends in breast augmentation. Gone are the days of oversized, fake-looking breasts. Today, more women are opting for “sperky” breasts — sporty and perky, with smaller cup sizes than ever before — like C instead of DD. This trend in breast augmentation emphasizes the fit, youthful look many busy women and moms on-the-go are seeking. It also allows women to live a more active lifestyle, including high-impact exercise, and minimizes the possibility for sagging over time. While there is still a market for larger breasts, they are the exception and not the norm. Today’s patients want their breasts enhanced and lifted, but not overdone.

Women with athletic bodies and small breasts no longer have to accept either augmentation or fitness — they can opt for both. Moms looking for a lift after breastfeeding don’t have to worry about losing their natural look — they can find the shape and rise that makes them happy. The new key to breast augmentation is in finding the best fit for each patient. This is not a one size fits all situation, and women should feel confident asking their doctors for exactly what they want.

It all comes down to choices: which implant to use, placement of the implant, and what procedure(s) to perform, can make all the difference in achieving your desired result. Let’s look at some choices that might make breast augmentation right for you.

Which implant is used: Silicone implants still lead the market over saline, however there are several different types, styles and shapes to choose from. Silicone implants vary in profile (how far the implant projects from the body), fill (how much silicone is present within the shell of the implant), and shape (the height and width of the implant varies based on patient body type). Each of these factors is key to considering the overall outcome of the surgery results. The patient and her doctor will decide on the best implant together. Allergan’s Natrelle® implant collection offers 600 round implants with 5 different fullness profiles. You can even choose “gummy implants,” – The gummier the implant, the more it holds its shape when held in your hand.

What procedure to perform: Though implants are the right choice for a woman who desires larger breasts, women over 40 or women who have experienced significant weight loss, multiple pregnancies or breastfeeding might be better suited for implants and a lift, or even a lift without implants. A good rule of thumb is to stand at a mirror and look at the direction the nipple points. If the nipple points straight ahead or slightly upward, a breast augmentation with an implant to increase volume will likely be what you need. If the nipple points down however, you may need a breast lift. Depending on the fullness you desire, an augmentation with an implant may be required. Women who choose to have a breast augmentation and lift at the same time may experience less scarring and downtime than those who schedule the procedures separately. Talk to your doctor about your desired results and schedule your procedure accordingly.
