What exactly are lip injections?

Lip injections, also known as lip augmentation or lip fillers, are a non-surgical, non-invasive way to create fuller, more voluminous lips. Lip fillers can also be used to change the shape or symmetry of the lips or to minimize fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth, also known as smoker’s lines or marionette lines. Most lip fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin known for adding volume and providing moisture and softness. Lip fillers are injected into the lips using a small syringe.

What’s the procedure like?

Depending on your desired outcome, lip injections can take anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes. They are done in our Fort Worth medical spa by one of our certified aesthetician injectors, all of whom have years of experience with fillers. An aesthetician will discuss your desired look with you to determine the best filler to use and how much to use. Typically, lip injection results last six months to a year and, by coming in before your results fade entirely, you can maintain your lips’ fullness.

Most patients say lip injections cause only mild discomfort, akin to getting a flu shot. There is virtually no downtime — but, you will want to avoid using straws or engaging in any steamy make-out sessions for about a day. Our aestheticians will apply an ice pack to your lips after the injections, which will help to minimize swelling. All swelling should dissipate within one to two days. As with any procedure, we recommended you avoid blood thinners like Advil or alcohol the day of your appointment to minimize bruising.

Choosing the right filler or combination of fillers depends on you desired look. Want to minimize fine lines on or around the lips? We would recommend Volbella. If you want to add fullness to your lips or change their shape, we would recommend Vollure. And for that va-va-voom look, we use Juvederm Ultra+. If you’re new to injections and want to start slow, we would recommend Vollure. Allergan’s lip fillers can also be combined to address multiple concerns at once. And for deep lines around the mouth, we often combine Volbella and Botox to relax the muscles.
